Summer 2011 FSI Undergraduate Field Research Internships

FSI Undergraduate Field Research Internships - Summer 2011

Sites include: Beijing and rural China; southwestern highlands of Guatemala; and Chiapas, Mexico.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: FEBRUARY 22, 2011

Overview

FSI is offering several research internships abroad to undergraduates to carry out global development research alongside a Stanford faculty member during summer quarter 2011. Internship teams of three students each will travel to sites in China, Guatemala, and Mexico. Working with partners on the ground in each country, the undergraduate research teams will spend approximately two weeks on location and another four weeks in the U.S. planning and completing the projects. A stipend of $1,500 plus full funding of travel, accommodations, insurance, and incidentals is included.

The program is designed to engage undergraduates in collaborative research that:

  • introduces undergraduates to issues of global chronic underdevelopment
  • promotes mentoring relationships between FSI faculty and students
  • enables undergraduates to contribute to FSI's policy-relevant research
  • fosters collaboration across disciplines at the undergraduate level
  • creates a pipeline of young scholars interested in solving global development problems

Eligibility and Application

The program is open to Stanford sophomores and juniors* with a minimum GPA of 3.3. Applicants will be required to provide:

  • statement of interest (one page maximum)
  • curriculum vitae or resume
  • copy of transcript (unofficial copy acceptable)
  • faculty letter of reference to be sent directly from the referee to FSI (can be brief); deadline for this letter is Mar. 1, 2011

Send the application materials to Veronica Marian (vmarian@stanford.edu) at FSI, and ask your faculty referee to send the letter of reference directly to FSI, with a deadline of Mar. 1, 2011. Preference will be given to students who plan to enroll in History 299X (or have already taken the course), and who have demonstrated a commitment to poverty alleviation, global development, and service learning.

The selection committee will strive to assemble a team of students reflecting divergent academic interests, ideally one from each of the social, natural, and applied sciences.
