Stanford Health Policy researchers are investigating the forces that shape children’s health here at home and around the world—from malnutrition and pollution to the lasting damage caused by conflict, political instability, and gun violence. They collaborate globally on projects to protect children—such as rescuing child cancer patients during the war in Ukraine—to adopting the emerging technologies of Silicon Valley to transform how children receive care and how providers deliver it.

 

Publication: A Global Analysis of Within-Country Health Inequalities

SHP’s Eran Bendavid and Grant Miller examine how health inequalities in the United States compare with other countries, conducting a cross-sectional study using an index of health inequality across 181 countries and territories. Their study in JAMA Health Forum found that inequality in life expectancy at birth has been declining globally, as well as in the United States, since at least 1960. Despite this long-term decline, inequality in life expectancy has been improving less in the U.S. in comparison with other high-income countries—and in recent years it has even been rising in absolute terms in the United States. They determined that the largest contributor to inequality in life expectancy at birth is infant and child mortality.
