If it's Tuesday, this must be Denver: A Case Report from a National Job Search in Health Services Research

  • Pete Groeneveld

The national job search for a faculty appointment in health services research is fundamentally different than the more familiar and well-documented application procedures for medical or graduate school, residency, and fellowship. Limited resources exist to guide the applicant, and there are likely to be few peers with whom to compare notes. A well-prepared applicant will be in the best position to land a highly coveted academic position.

In this talk, Groeneveld will present his recommendations for a strategic and purposeful national job search, culled from his own recently completed search, the experiences of peers, and the published literature on the process. The framework for the discussion will include:

  • Goals
  • Background preparation
  • "Casting the net"
  • The first interview
  • The second interview
  • The end-game

Groeneveld will bring in the perspectives and experiences of other fellows as well as junior and senior faculty members.
